Six years ago, I embarked on a journey that would redefine my concept of home, family, and the beautiful chaos that comes with independence. Living away from my family has been a rollercoaster of emotions, lessons, and a whole lot of self-discovery. Today, I want to open up and share the highs, the lows, and the transformative moments that have shaped my path.
The Excitement of Independence: A Fresh Chapter Begins
The first taste of independence was electrifying, every decision felt like a step towards adulthood. The initial thrill of freedom was invigorating, like a breath of fresh air after being in the familiar cocoon of family life but, I didn't just moved out, I decided to cross the globe and flight from one side of the world to the other one so, pretty far away from family.
Navigating Homesickness: The Emotional Tug of War
Amidst the excitement, homesickness hit like a tidal wave specially when you are so far and you can't even drive 10 or 30 minutes to see your people. Missing family gatherings, Sunday dinners, and the comforting presence of familiar faces became an unexpected challenge. Late-night calls and video chats became my lifelines, bridging the physical distance with emotional connections.
The Friendship Frontier: Creating a Family Away From Home
As I settled into my new life, friendships evolved into a chosen family. The people I met became my support system, confidants, and partners in the adventures of adulthood. Shared laughter, shared struggles—these friendships transformed into a surrogate family that made the distance more bearable. This took a long time, it's hard to find your community in a complete different country, some people come and go, until slowly your tribe starts to take form.
Culinary Adventures: From Kitchen Blunders to Culinary Triumphs
I am definitely not a kitchen person, so living away from family meant I had to confront my culinary skills—or lack thereof. From burnt pasta to culinary triumphs, the kitchen became a playground of experimentation. I am still a beginner in this field, I actually don't have it in me but, I have learnt to feed myself with the right food.
Financial Independence: A Lesson in Budgeting and Prioritizing
I left home right after I finished my degree so, my parents helped me with my studies here in Australia the first year but, I decided to stay so, I had to make my own money and managing finances became a crash course in adulting. Budgeting, bills, and financial priorities were no longer abstract concepts. It was a journey of learning the value of money, making smart choices, and finding a balance between treating myself and saving for the future.
Celebrating Milestones from Afar: Balancing Joy and Longing
Missing out on family birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations was bittersweet. While I celebrated from afar through video calls and messages, there was a longing for the tangible presence of loved ones during those special moments. Each milestone marked a tinge of homesickness mixed with the joy of shared accomplishments.
Professional Growth: Finding My Footing in the World
Living away from family pushed me to dive headfirst into my career. I'm actually and interior designer but with no experience and coming fresh from overseas became very hard to find a job on that field so, I had to jump on my computer and become a freelance graphic designer. It was a time of professional growth, taking risks, and learning to navigate the intricacies of the workplace. The challenges and triumphs became part of a narrative that was uniquely mine, shaping my identity beyond familial ties.
Rediscovering Home: A Fluid Concept
Through the years, I've come to realize that home is not a fixed location; it's a feeling. It's the laughter shared with friends, the aroma of a home-cooked meal, and the comfort found in the familiarity of routines. Home is wherever I am, and it's a concept that has evolved beautifully.
Reflections and Gratitude: A Journey Well Worth It
As I reflect on these six years living away from my family, I'm filled with gratitude for the growth, the challenges, and the love that has accompanied this journey. The distance has not diminished the bond; instead, it has added layers of appreciation for the moments shared and the connections that endure.
To everyone navigating the waters of independence away from family, remember this: the journey is as important as the destination. Each step, whether a stumble or a stride, contributes to the tapestry of your unique story.
